Decks, screened porches and patios are where Charleston life happens, which means they take a beating: wet summers, spring pollen, sap from overhanging trees and, on the islands, a steady coat of salt. Wood left in that environment turns gray, grows mildew in the shade and becomes slippery after an afternoon storm.
Wood is also where careless pressure washing does the most harm. A narrow, high-pressure stream tears away the softer fibers between growth rings, leaving a fuzzy, furrowed surface that looks worse once it dries and absorbs stain unevenly. We clean decks at controlled pressure with wide fan tips and suitable wood cleaners, working along the grain.
Ipe and other tropical hardwoods deserve special mention. Many waterfront homes here feature Ipe because it is dense, durable and resistant to rot. Left unfinished, it weathers to silver; many owners prefer to keep its rich brown color with periodic oiling. A careful Ipe deck cleaning removes the gray and grime and prepares the boards so a finish soaks in evenly. When it’s time to refinish, our painting and wood refinishing team can strip, sand, stain and seal the hardwood.
Ground-level patios and pool areas are handled alongside our concrete and paver cleaning, and all of it is part of our wider Charleston pressure washing services.
